Introduction & Overview
Axie Infinity is a Pokémon-inspired game universe launched in 2018, and one of the few games in existence where players actually own the creatures, resources, and currencies they acquire in the game. This is huge!
The game is built using Blockchain. Therefore, the game’s economy is designed to be compatible with that underlying system and technology.
While still in early access, Axie is ranked the #1 Ethereum game by daily, weekly, and monthly active users. It has generated over 13,000 ETH in revenue (16M+ USD) so far. [Reference]
Since players have ownership over what they purchase or earn in the game, and can also sell them, it has driven tangible income for many people around the globe, especially those in emerging markets where they can literally earn more than certain full-time jobs by playing Axie Infinity.
Currently, gameplay within the Axie Infinity universe includes:
Player-vs-player [PVP] battles
Player-vs-environment [PVE] battles
Breeding and selling Axies
Collecting and speculating on various rare Axies
However, this is just the beginning of the Axie universe and much more gameplay will be added over time!

Cryptocurrency & Blockchain Primer
It’s helpful to understand some basics around Cryptocurrencies and Blockchain and how they relate to Axie Infinity before getting started if you are not familiar already.
Some definitions first:
Cryptocurrency: A digital currency in which transactions are verified and records maintained in a decentralized Blockchain, rather than by a centralized authority.
Blockchain: A system in which a record of transactions are maintained across several computers that are linked in a peer-to-peer network.
Ethereum: A decentralized, open-source blockchain with smart contract functionality. Ether (ETH or Ξ) is the native cryptocurrency of the platform.
Gas Fees: Transaction fees to pay for computing energy required to process and validate transactions on the Ethereum blockchain.
Smart Contract: A smart contract is a self-executing contract with the terms of the agreement between buyer and seller being directly written into lines of code.
ERC-20: Technical standard used for all smart contracts on the Ethereum blockchain for token implementation. Plenty of well-known cryptocurrencies use the ERC-20 standard including the RONIN, SLP, and AXS tokens that are used in Axie Infinity.
Non-Fungible Token (NFT): A unit of data stored on a Blockchain that certifies a digital asset to be unique and therefore not interchangeable.
Sidechain: A sidechain is a parallel blockchain created from an original blockchain such as Ethereum. Sidechains use an independent consensus mechanism to that of the original chain, which can be optimized for speed and scalability.
Governance Token: Governance tokens are cryptocurrencies that represent voting power on a blockchain project.
Within Axie Infinity, the Axies, Land, and Items are all NFTs. The associated tokens RONIN, SLP, and AXS are all ERC-20 tokens so they can be exchanged for other tokens on exchanges such as Uniswap.
Some more details on the specific Axie Infinity related tokens:
RONIN: Axie Infinity originally solely used Ethereum to process Axie sales. However, due to congestion and gas fee issues, the team transitioned to a sidechain, Ronin, to help players make transactions faster, cheaper, and more seamlessly. Now all transactions around Axies are done with the Ronin currency.
Smooth Love Potion (SLP): SLP is earned as rewards from battles in Axie Infinity and is used for breeding Axies, they are burned when used for breeding. It can also be bought and sold on exchanges such as Uniswap. See its current value here
Axie Infinity Shards (AXS): AXS is the governance token of the game and is also required to breed Axies. AXS owners will eventually be able to vote on decisions that affect the game. See its current value here, and dig into to in-depth details here.
Getting Set-Up
There are numerous guides and videos online on how to just get everything up and running, so recommend just checking these out:

Getting Started
Once you are all set-up it is recommended that you start with exploring the Battle gameplay first.
You could technically jump into Breeding gameplay too, but it would be beneficial to have some understanding of Battles first so you can have a feel for what may be desirable to breed for. Land gameplay is not available yet.
To battle, you will need three Axies. Since you haven’t experienced Battles yet, it will be difficult to have a good feel of which ones to pick intuitively, but going through the content here you should be able to get enough information to get sufficient ones to start!
Axie Classes
Classes are similar to “types” in Pokemon. Certain Classes are stronger or weaker against other Classes. Here is the basic chart.
The Axie that has the class advantage will deal +15% damage and disadvantage will deal -15% damage. For example, a Bird class Axie deals +15% damage to a Beast class Axie. Also, when an Axie of a certain class uses a card from its own class, it gets a 10% attack and shield bonus. For example, a Plant Axie playing a plant card will receive 10% extra attack/shield. Important to note is that these bonuses stack. A Beast Axie using a Beast card against a Plant target will do 25% (10% + 15%) more damage. [Reference]

Axie Attribute [Stats / Body Parts / Attacks]
You can learn about all of the main Axie stats and body parts here: Axie Infinity Alpha Guide!
An Axie’s stats are dependent on its Class and Body Parts. Base stats for each Class and what different Body Parts add to the stats for a given Axie can be found here.
An Axie’s attacks (cards) are dependent on its Body Parts. A full list of them can be found at Axie Zone here.
Axie attacks have multiple attributes including:
Damage: The red number, how much base damage the card deals against the opponent Axie
Shield: How much base defense shield your Axie will get that will defend against opponent attacks, after which their attacks start hitting your Axie HP directly
Effects: Cards can cause numerous effects, from stealing energy to lowering an opponent's Axie's speed.

Tips
Your initial Axies will likely not be the best ones and that’s okay! You can always sell them later and get new ones. It is better to just get started!
“Floor Axies” [i.e. the cheapest Axies] will be very difficult for you to win efficiently to earn, however if you just want to see how everything works you can get them, try things out, and sell them later once you have a better idea of how the game works.
Many typical beginner builds consist of a Tank [e.g. Plant], Utility/Attacker [e.g. Beast], and Attacker [e.g. Bird / Aquatic]. Some good cards for each can be found here: List of Best Cards for Each Class in Axie Infinity.
Actively use the filters to find the best Class/Pureness/Breed Count/Parts/Stats that align with what you’re looking for
See what top players are using in their builds here
If you are already actively looking to breed, you will want Axies with high pureness and low breed count. Filter for those!
Once you’ve purchased you first three Axies, to have them show up in the game make sure to go to Axies on the bottom left and click Sync Axies for them to appear.
Axie Infinity Universe Concepts
There are some basic concepts and definitions that are helpful to understand about the Axie Infinity Universe before diving in!
Smooth Love Potion - SLP
This is a basic resource in the Axie Infinity universe and the primary reward you earn from playing the game currently.
SLP is required to breed Axies but can also be exchanged for currencies such as ETH on exchanges like Uniswap.
It is one of the primary ways that players can generate income directly from playing:
Play > Earn SLP > Exchange for ETH > Sell ETH for $$$
Purity
Axie purity is generally defined in the game as the number of body parts the Axie has which match their Class.
E.g. An Axie that has 4 body parts that match its Class, will have a Pureness of 4/6
However, there is also a secondary definition that is more relevant to if you are considering breeding which is not just around the apparent body parts, but around the actual gene purity.
Battle Gameplay
Overview
The Axie battle system is a turn-based card game where the goal is to eliminate all enemies your team of 3 Axies is facing. Each turn, a player must strategically play cards that maximize their chance of victory. See more basic information here.
Adventure [PVE] vs Arena [PVP]
There are two battle modes currently, one is Adventure where you battle against artificially generated opponents [Player Versus Environment - PVE], the other is Arena where you battle against other players [Player Versus Player - PVP].
Your Axies can only gain Experience Points [XP] and Level-Up in Adventure mode but there is no leveling up in Arena.
Energy
Energy is a resource that dictates if you can earn rewards for playing.
Each battle uses up one Energy. Once you have depleted your Energy for a given day you will have to wait for the next day to replenish your energy. Energy replenishes at Midnight UTC each day.
The following shows what you can obtain depending on if you’re using Energy or not for Battles.
The maximum amount and refill speed of Energy depends on the number of Axies you own:
3 to 9 Axies: 20 Energy
10 to 19 Axies: 40 Energy
20+ Axies: 60 Energy
Although there may be indications in the game that it refills every 6 hours, currently it refills once a day.
SLP Rewards
SLP rewards can be earned in Adventure [PVE], Arena [PVP], and Quests.
Adventure [PVE] - SLP Rewards
Currently in Adventure mode you can earn up to 50 max SLP per day.
Different levels will offer different potential amounts of SLP. These are the potential amounts, so beating higher levels will help you hit your max SLP from Adventure mode per day faster.
Level 1-4: 1 SLP per win
Level 5-9: 2 SLP per win
Level 10-14: 4 SLP per win
Level 15-16: 6 SLP per win
Level 17-20: Random between 6-10 SLP per win
Level 21-36: Random between 10-20 SLP per win
Arena [PVP] - SLP Rewards
You are only limited by Energy on how much SLP you can earn from Arena in a day. Your MMR determines how much SLP you might win from a given Arena match, here are some estimates based on the latest Season:
Quests - SLP Rewards
There are quests within the game where you can earn more rewards. Currently only Daily Quests are available. Tap on the Quests icon at the top of the main screen to view your progress.
Daily Quest
Completing the daily quest will earn you a total of 25 max SLP per day. To complete the quest you will have to:
Complete the daily check in
Win 10 Adventure matches [can repeat the same stage]
Win 5 Arena matches
Battle wins will count towards your Quest even if you are not using Energy for them.
Positioning
There are 7 different positions you can place your Axies as outlined here. Generally, a given Axie will attack the opponent’s Axie closest to them.
The Lanes are the vertical positions that you position your Axies. This affects who they will attack on the opponent's side that is closest.
The Back/Mid/Front line represents who will likely take damage first (Frontline) and last (Backline). That is of course unless the opponent has certain cards that allow them to target Axies outside of the closest one.
Some good content explaining some of this:
Team Formation Guide/Tutorial - MarkDC Studio
Best Team Position for Beginners - nosebleed gaming
Tips
If you have an Axie in the middle lane and the opponent has Axies in both the top and bottom lane the same distance away, there is a 50/50 chance your Axie will attack the bottom or top one.
General basic strategy: Tanks at the front, Attackers at the back
Basic Battle Flow & Concepts
Flow
Receive a certain amount of battle Energy per turn.
Note that this battle Energy is completely independent and unrelated to the Energy mentioned above that dictates if you will be able to earn rewards.
Choose cards to play for each Axie, number of cards that can be played will be limited based on how much Energy stockpiled and Energy required per card.
End Turn
Based on the different Speeds of the Axies, they will take turns using their cards to attack/defend/buff/debuff etc.
Repeat
You can see the Battle Phase illustrated in the official Alpha Guide here.
Tips
Timing details [Reference]
Shield is applied immediately, when the cards are chosen
Effects are applied when the Axie attacks during its turn
Speed buffs that affect the attack order are applied next turn
Last Stand
If an Axie’s health is depleted, it will die, or enter what is known as “Last Stand”. Higher Morale stat will make an Axie more likely to enter Last Stand and have more Last Stand health bars.
You can view full details on how it is calculated here: What is Last Stand in Axie Infinity?
Combos and Chaining
The Chain buff happens when multiple Axies use an ability card of the same class.
Chains add a shield buff to these Axies.
A Combo happens when an Axie uses more than 2 ability cards in one round. Combos add damage. [Reference]

Keep your Tank in the frontline, and Attackers behind it
Adventure [PVE]
In Adventure mode you battle artificially generated enemies called “Chimera”.
Your Axies also level up in Adventure mode as they gain Experience Points [XP] so even if your team is not as good, eventually they will get stronger and you should be able to move up in the stages even if it is slower. Each level up is an additional 5% to your Axie’s stats. This compounds so this can be quite beneficial over a few levels. Here is an example of how the stats can increase as you level up.

Tips
Use your Energy and level up your Axies in Adventure first so that you will be able to earn more efficiently there long-term
Generally once your Axies are high level in Arena:
Use up all Energy in Arena where SLP can only be earned if Energy is used
Then max out daily SLP earnings in Adventure
Claim Daily Quest SLP

Breeding Gameplay
Overview
Breeding is how new Axies are generated! Two Axies can be bred together to create a new Axie that will be a mix of the parents’ genes. Breeding requires AXS and SLP to be used. It is the primary use case of SLP outside of just selling it on the market.
There is a great summary here by Putra Isyraq that covers all the basics: Breeding Costs and Considerations.

Tips
Ideally use the same Classes to breed to get better purity that will be higher value and more useful in battles
Check prices for how much you will be able to sell the parents and children for based on their attributes to ensure you will be profitable
Usually to maximize purity across generations [as one wrong gene can ruin an Axie], you want to breed Axies that are at least 95% pure
However, you probably don’t want to purchase 100% pure Axies to breed, as they are significantly more expensive and the ROI is likely not worth it
Breeding Farms
There are ways to scale breeding so that with an initial investment you can breed and profit continuously.
ABC Method
The ABC method involves starting with three Axies and scaling that out over time to continuing breeding and profiting.

Special Axies
There are special Axies that exist and are more rare. As you can imagine, they are also much more expensive. These include:
Origin: The original 4088 Axies in the Axie Universe that have spawned all others
Mystic: Each Origin Axie had a chance to get one or more Mystic body part that are visually unique. They do not have any special function in combat. There was a 1/18 chance of a body part being Mystic.
MEO I / MEO II: An Axie created with MEO Tokens. MEO Tokens were initially given out to Axie community members for winning contests or creating outstanding content but have no been given out more recently
Agamogenesis Axies: The Agamogenesis Axies are three exclusive Axies that were auctioned off prior to the opening of the Axie Lab. Each Agamogenesis Axie has a Bionic Part that has been custom built by the MEO Corporation to replace lost appendages.
Low ID: Axies that existed much earlier on in the game’s history with maybe two digit IDs

Scholarships
Overview
Axie Infinity “Scholarships” are an unofficial system created by the community to enable less wealthy players to access the game and earn income, while simultaneously allowing players with capital and spare Axies to gain returns from them.
Scholars can play for a Manager, who provides the Scholar with an initial three Axies to use for battle, and they would share the SLP earnings from the Scholar’s gameplay.
Good Managers also help scholars learn about the game and how to win in battles to earn more.
Eventually, Scholars may save up enough to purchase their own Axies and will no longer need to be sponsored.
Currently, many Scholars are found in Southeast Asia where the earnings from Axie Infinity can make a tangible difference in their day-to-day lives.
Roles in the Scholarship Ecosystem
Scholars: These are the players who are given Axies to play with to earn SLP.
Managers: These are the people who fund scholars by providing Axies for them to play with. In return, they will receive an ongoing portion of the earnings.
Guilds: Larger organizations that sponsor many scholars and maybe have numerous people helping to fund and run the entire operation
Compensation Rates
The typical rate in the market currently is a 50/50 split between Manager and Scholar. However, this varies depending on the Manager/Scholar and can range up to 70/30 in either direction. Most good Managers do try to give at least 50% to Scholars.
Ultimately, the Manager should ensure Scholars are motivated while ensuring they’re gaining a return they’re comfortable with.
Becoming a Scholarship Manager
Risk & Safety
Important information to understand before starting a scholarship is how to ensure it’s done in a safe way where you remove any risks of losing your Axies or earnings.
The way this will be set-up is that you will create a new Ronin and Axie Infinity account for your Scholar that they have access to play with. However,
Also, if your Scholars break game rules it may cause your account or Axies to be banned so it is important to find Scholars who will play by the game rules. Here’s a video that goes over some nuances with ban rules: Latest BAN RULES: WATCH NOW or LOSE EVERYTHING!
Generally avoid giving more valuable Axies for Scholars to use such as those with Mystic parts or low breed counts.
Plan Economics and Expectations
Ensure you review the numbers and potential earnings from Scholars, to ensure you will be profitable.
Align expectations with your Scholar to ensure they are willing to deliver a certain level of earnings regularly.
Recruiting a Scholar
Ideally find people whom you trust refer scholars.
Otherwise, interview and get to know people in the community who may be a good fit.
Places to find Scholars:
Social media - Facebook groups, Twitter etc.
Discord groups - Official Axie Infinity Discord channel
Refer friends/families to the game and get them started
Filtering
Many Scholarship Managers are also Influencers / Creators, so they will require potential Scholars to interact in their Twitch streams, YouTube videos, Twitter etc to be eligible for Scholarships
Talk/communicate with and interview Scholars before bringing them on - Zoom/Google Meet, chatting, etc. to ensure they are communicative and you feel comfortable with them
Have them provide their IDs, Ronin wallet ID, Metamask ID etc.
Since Arena mode is important to maximize SLP, feeling confident that they will be able to learn and excel in Arena is helpful
Providing Axies
You can purchase Axies for your Scholars, but it would be more cost-efficient to provide Axies you breed
Since Arena mode is important to maximize SLP, providing them decently powerful Axies is helpful
Logistical Set-up and Operation
The following are required to manage a scholarship:
Google Chome or Firefox
Metamask account
Axie infinity account
Ronin wallet account
Axies to lend to scholars
Then the general steps are as follows:
Logout from the Marketplace
Create a new Ronin account for your scholar
Create an Axie Infinity account for the scholar with the new Ronin account
Create a gmail account to associate with the new Axie Infinity account.
Use _ _ _ _ + _ _ _ @gmail.com notation with a single gmail account to easily create “new addresses”. Then add a filter/label into your gmail to filter for emails for that particular Scholar [Reference] [Additional Instructions]
Attach the gmail account and create a password, verify with the email code
Sign-out, go back to your main account, and Gift the Axies you want to give to the Scholar to their associated Ronin wallet
Sign-out, go back to the Scholar account and confirm the Axies are there
The account is set - give the Scholar the account credentials to the marketplace or give them the generated QR code. QR code will be limited to mobile only. DO NOT GIVE CREDENTIALS OR SEED PHRASES FOR YOUR RONIN WALLET OR METAMASK WALLET, OR ELSE THEY WILL BE ABLE TO TRANSFER ASSETS.
The Scholar can now download Axie and then login with your given marketplace credentials or QR code, and start earning!

Termination
Options:
Change the password/credentials to the account
Gift the Axies out
Becoming a Scholar

Do
Interact and add value in various Discords and communities
Build genuine connections and relationships in the community
Create an online profile with a clear bio and photo, and have a presence
For larger guilds, find and interact with the Scholarship Managers specifically
Gain connections and referrals from existing Scholars
Show that you have knowledge of the game and will be able to excel in Arena
Do not
Spam and harass people
Send people stories to get pity
Beg for a scholarship from anyone and everyone

FAQ
How much can I earn per hour?
This will change over time and depends on how you play.
For example, say you are playing in the Arena [PVP] with an MMR of approximately 1200 and you win 50% of your games. Assuming you complete about 10 rounds in that hour, with 6 SLP per win you would make 6 x 5 = 30 SLP = $6 currently.
However, within a day if you are completing your Daily Quest and playing in Arena too then your average hourly rate will change accordingly. Ultimately it will be up to how you play and the progress you make over time.
How much do I have to spend to get started?
You can see price floors for Axies here: https://www.chillaxie.com/price-floors
Given the cheapest ones are about $200 USD you would need around $600 USD to get started. However, this is not recommended as those are likely not great Axies for battle and you will want to get more expensive ones. More realistically for decent Axies you might want to spend closer to $1000 at least.
One thing to keep in mind is that these are investments and have value in the market, so you can always sell them to get new ones later.
Glossary
Buff - Make more powerful / useful in some way.
Debuff - Make less powerful / useful in some way.
Frontliner / Midliner / Backline - General positions for which Axies are closer to the front or back, and therefore will be more or less likely to be attacked first.
Off-Tank - Secondary Axie meant to take damage
Tank - The Axie meant to take a lot of damage
RIMP - Stands for “Ronin” and “Imp” body parts. They are a signature part of a certain Beast build, as they combo well together to recover energy and do critical hit damage.
PVE - Player versus Environment - when a player is competing with artificially generated opponents and obstacles
PVP - Player versus Player - when a player is competing with another player
Hello, thanks for this article.
I have another question.
